Level Up Engagement: Exploring New Ways to Engage Young People

How do we create activities where young people don't simply attend, but actually participate, contribute and feel that their voices matter?
This was at the heart of “Level Up Engagement,” an international Erasmus+ learning experience held in Šibenik, Croatia, from 23–29 March 2026.
Participants representing Abantu Kultuur joined young people and youth workers from different European countries for a week of learning, exchange and international collaboration.
The project created a space to explore youth engagement and to exchange experiences, perspectives and approaches with people working and participating in different cultural and community environments.
Learning Through Participation
Youth engagement is more than simply getting young people into a room. Meaningful engagement happens when participants have opportunities to express themselves, contribute ideas, take responsibility and become active parts of the learning process.
During the programme, participants experienced an international non-formal learning environment where learning happened through participation, interaction and exchange rather than traditional classroom teaching.
Working alongside people from different countries also meant encountering different ways of communicating, organising activities and approaching youth work.
These international encounters are an important part of Erasmus+ projects. They allow participants to learn not only from the programme itself, but also directly from one another.
Building Connections Across Europe
Living and learning together in Šibenik also created opportunities for intercultural exchange.
Participants brought different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives into the same space. Conversations continued beyond organised activities, creating opportunities to discover other cultures, challenge assumptions and build connections across borders.
For participants representing Abantu Kultuur, experiences like Level Up Engagement also connect with our wider commitment to international cooperation, education and cultural exchange. Abantu Kultuur works to create bridges between communities and participates in international projects and networks as part of this mission.
Bringing the Experience Home
An Erasmus+ experience does not end when participants return home.
The ideas, methods, perspectives and connections developed during international projects can continue through local organisations, community activities and future initiatives.
For Abantu Kultuur, participating in European learning opportunities is also about creating pathways for people in Estonia to gain international experience and bring what they learn back into their communities.
Projects such as Level Up Engagement help strengthen the knowledge and international connections that can support future youth, educational and cultural activities.
More Than a Week Abroad
International mobility can be easy to describe simply as travelling to another country. Its real value, however, comes from what happens when people with different experiences are given the opportunity to learn together.
Level Up Engagement was one of those opportunities.
A week of exchanging ideas, meeting people from different backgrounds, learning in an international environment and returning home with new perspectives.
We are grateful to the organisers, partners and participants who made the experience possible.
